A close-up look

Kashmir has had a tormented past. The last time this valley had an indigenous rule was under Yusuf Shah Chak. Since then, Mughals, Afghans, Sikhs, Dogras and now India have been holding the valley under seige. This makes us one of longest occupations in human history. Resistance has been a constant. It has achieved more vehemence since India took over from Dogras.

Occupations are brutal. They eliminate people to dispossess and snatch their territory. Throughout occupational regimes, putting Kashmiris to death for perpetuating their authoritarian power has been their hallmark. India, with all it’s military might and war weaponry, has taken to inhumane tactics of forcibly suppressing people who dissent against the foreign illegal rule.

In addition to killings; disappearances, torture, rape, imprisonment, sodomy, begar, fake encounters have come to define foreign rule over Kashmir. The survivors of centuries of occupation bear testimony to this fact. They represent the banality of what an occupier can do. Their remembrance nourishes our history. Their existence feeds our resistance.
