The uprising that started in 2016 never really ended, 2017 has turned out to be one of the bloodiest years in Kashmir Valley. A total of 384 casualties were reported this year, which includes 207 militants, 93 armed forces personnel and 84 civilians. Lost Kashmiri History, in collaboration with Awaaz, has compiled a list of major events that took place in 2017. 


6 January – Prominent rebel, Muzaffar Iqbal Naikoo was killed in an encounter. Amid heavy snowfall and restrictions, thousands attend his funeral prayers in his hometown Sopore.


17 January – Three rebels including Adil from Bijbehara were killed in an encounter in Pahalgam. Thousands attended the funeral amid freezing cold.


21 January – Muzaffar Rather from Kulgam, currently lodged in a jail in Kolkata is awarded death sentence by an Indian court. Family says he is falsely implicated. Shutdown, protests were observed across Kashmir over court’s order.


January 25: Snow avalanches in Sonmarg and Gurez kill at least fourteen Indian soldiers.


12 February – Encounter breaks out in Frisal Kulgam. Four rebels and two civilians are killed. Thousands turned up for funerals.


6 March – Rebel commander, Aqib Molvi is killed in an encounter in Tral.


9 March – Encounter broke out in Padgampora. Two rebels and two civilians were killed in the process. In picture: Mother of slain teenager Amir feeds him milk during his last rites.


9 March – A boy weeps profusely during the funeral of his teenage friend, Amir Nazir. Amir was killed by Indian forces.


10 March – Lone woman offers prayers outside Jamia Masjid as authorities locked it after killings in South Kashmir. In 2017, Jamia Masjid was locked on 18 Fridays out of 52.


10 March – Amid snowfall a youth pelts stones on forces in Pulwama.

15 March
– Encounter between rebels and forces in Kupwara. During encounter, forces shoot dead 6 year old Kaneeza. Later blame stray bullet for the killing.

26 March – Prominent rebel Shahbaz Ahmad Wani was Killed. South Kashmir came to the halt as thousands joined funeral.


28 March – Encounter in Chadoora. Three civilians were killed and scores injured. “Stray bullet” is caught on camera.


29 March – A Kashmiri kid is forced to do sit-ups as punishment for breaking the curfew.


31 March – Railway track turned into a battlefield. Clashes between forces and youth in Rawalpora Srinagar.


9 April – Polling day turns mourning day. 7% votes and 8 people dead. 1 more succumbed after few days.


9 April – Indian Army uses a youth, Farooq Dar as a human shield. Farooq, one among 7% voters is tied to bonnet of Army jeep to teach stone pelters a ‘lesson’.


15 April – Days after an army vehicle came under stone pelting inside GDC Pulwama, Indian forces raid the college. 58 students including girls were injured in the clashes that followed. Two received pellet injuries in eyes.


April 16 – Infamous government gunman, Abdul Rashid Billa was shot dead by rebels at Hajin.


17 April – A new wave of protests engrossed Kashmir. Students across Kashmir hit the streets protesting against assault on their brethren in GDC Pulwama. Hundreds were injured.


17 April – During a student protest, Iqra a student of Nawakadal college is hit by a rock thrown by Indian forces. Iqra develops a crack in her skull, student protests aggravate.


20 April – A schoolgirl was injured in a protest against Indian forces. Photojournalist Dar Yasin paused his professional duty to help the injured girl reach hospital.


21 April – Students Uprising – A girl student pelts stones on Indian forces in a Srinagar street. | This picture went viral all over Kashmir.


26 April – Students of GDC Pulwama hoist a Pakistan flag atop the college building.


24 April: PDP District President Advocate Abdul Gani Dar was shot dead by suspected militants in Pinglan village of Pulwama district.


27 April – After massive protests in the valley, authorities imposed a month long ban on 22 Social media sites. The ban was rendered useless as Kashmiris used VPNs to bypass it.


4 May – 90s style crackdowns return. Three dozen villages in Shopian were besieged. Houses were ransacked, people beaten up, shops looted and many youth arrested. A civilian is killed in a rebel ambush in the evening. he had been forced to drive the army personnel back home in his cab.


4 May – Students of Girls Higher Secondary School, Sopore are teargassed by Indian forces during a protest.


10 May – A Kashmiri army officer of Kulgam Umar Fayaz was abducted and killed by unidentified gunmen.


27 May – Rebel commander Sabzar Bhat is martyred along with a 16-year-old associate, Faizan. Shutdown, protests and clashes were seen across Kashmir. One civilian was killed and around seventy were injured. Thousands attend the funeral despite a curfew.


1 June – Two local militants killed in Nithipora area of Sopore town in an encounter. They were identified as Basharat Sheikh of Bomai and Ajaz Ahmed Mir of Brat Kalan Sopore.


7 June – Adil Farouq is shot dead when indian forces fired on youth who pelted stones on them during a search operation.


12 June – After locals celebrate Pakistan’s win in Chapions Trophy ’17 in Shopian, Army wreaked havoc. Vandalised properties and thrashed people.


16 June – Gunfight broke out in Arwani Islamabad. Junaid Mattoo was among the three trapped rebels. Two civilians and three rebels were killed as Indian forces blasted the houses with IEDs. On the same day, rebels ambushed a police vehicle in Achabal, killing 6 cops including SHO.


16 June – Indian forces again use a boy as a human shield, this time during a clash with protestors in Arwani, Islamabad.

18 June – Kashmiri people celebrate after Pakistan’s win in the ICC Champions Trophy final cricket match against India.


22 June – Encounter in Kakpora Pulwama. Three rebels and one civilian killed. Indian forces blasted houses and charred bodies of rebels.


22 June – People used a boat to ferry the charred body of a slain rebel, Irshad, to his home as Indian Army had sealed all roads leading to his hometown, Awantipora.


23 June – DySP Ayub Pandit is beaten to death outside Jamia Masjid on Shab-e-Qadr eve. As per people, Ayub had fired on people, injuring three after people suspected him of being a spy. Police initially feigned ignorance about presence of any cops in mosque premises but later owned him.


26 June – Eid ul Fitr in Kashmir.


1 July – Encounter breaks out in Dialgam, Islamabad. Two rebels and two civilians were killed by Indian forces. In picture: Indian Army vehicle runs over cars erected as roadblocks by locals to stop them from reaching the encounter site.


1 July – Neighbours and relatives console son (left) and sister (right) of Tahira Begum, a civilian. She was killed near the encounter site.


3 July – Encounter in Bamnoo Pulwama. Three rebels were killed in the 23 hour-long gunfight. Forces again charred bodies of rebels and blew up several houses as collective punishment.


10 July – Terror attack on Amaranth pilgrims in Botengoo Islamabad. 7 Yatris were killed and many injured. The barbaric attack is disowned by all rebel groups and condemned by one and all in the Kashmir valley.


12 July – Three rebels were killed in an encounter in Budgam. Among them was Sajad Gilkar a resident of Nowhatta in old Srinagar.

21 July – A civilian, Tanveer Ahmad was killed as Indian Army (Major Gogoi’s regiment) fired on protesters in Budgam. Army & Police later contradict each other in statements.


26 July – Military Tribunal suspended life sentence of all five Army personnel involved in Machil fake-encounter and set them free. Tribunal justified the judgement saying the slain were wearing PATHANI SUITS which is usually worn by militants. Machil was the only case wherein culprits had been punished by the state.


1 August – Encounter in Hakripora, Pulwama. Two prominent rebels, Abu Dujana and Arif Lelhari were killed. Forces blew up houses and fired on civilians which let to the death of two civilians.


1 August – Pregnant wife of Firdous Ahmad wails over his body. Firdous, a civilian was killed by Indian forces in Hakripora, Pulwama.


5 August – Three rebels including Abid Mir from Hajin were killed in an encounter in Sopore. Abid was the first rebel from Hajin to get killed in an encounter in last 12 years. Thousands attended his funeral.


10 August – A girl weeps during the funeral of a rebel in Tral. Zahid along with 2 other rebels was martyred in a shootout in Tral forests.


2017 – After the ground failed to accommodate them to due to heavy rush, youths offer funeral prayers to a rebel on a wall. Picture from Bamnoo, Pulwama.


12 August – Encounter broke out in Awneera, Shopian. By the end of this 18-hour-long encounter three rebels including Yasin Yatto and two civilians were killed. Two army men were also lost their lives.


15 August – Indian Independence Day in Kashmir. A shutdown was observed all over Kashmir.


23 August – Days after the Indian army had claimed to have killed an intruding terrorist on the LOC, slain turned out to be a student, Shahid, from Handwara. Handwara was later put under curfew and internet was suspended.


26 August – Fidayeen strike DPL, Pulwama. In the 17-hour-long standoff eight troopers and three rebels were killed. In picture: Youths pelt stones on Indian Army near DPL.


29 August – 5-year-old Zohra wails during wreath laying ceremony of her father. Her father an ASI in Police was killed by rebels.


2 September – Eid-ul-Adha in Kashmir.


5 September – Photojournalist Kamran Yousuf was arrested by NIA. It has been 117 days.


11 September – In an encounter, two young rebels, Dawood Elahi and Sayar Sheikh, were martyred in Kulgam. Dawood’s mother suffered brain haemorrhage after his death.


Sep-Oct 2017 – A new psy-op like ‘Op Ghost’ of the 90s is experimented in the valley. “Unidentified people” accused of being aided by the police chopped braids of women, terrorizing entire valley. Protests erupted again as braids of more than 100 women were chopped in total.


11 October – Rebel Nasrullah Mir is killed in an encounter in Hajin. 2 IAF commandos also lost their lives. Hajin continues to rubbing off it’s notorious past, emerges as North Kashmir’s rebel hub.


14 October – Prominent rebel, Waseem Shah is killed in an encounter. One civilian also lost his life. Thousands thronged to his funeral in Shopian.


18 October – After chopping braid of a woman in Sallar, the braid chopper escaped into an Army Casper. People chased the vehicle but were fired upon. Five were injured.


18 November – Thousands of people attended the funeral of Mughees Ahmed Mir. ISIS claimed him.


4 December – Sister of a rebel, Yawar Bashir, wails during his funeral.


11 December: 10-month-old Zaira from Shopian calmly suckling on the feeder as a boy holds her in his lap, crying inconsolably. Zaira’s mother was killed in ‘crossfire’.


19 December – Daughter of Misra Bano cries during her funeral. Misra Bano was shot dead by Indian forces after she opened the window during the encounter to see what was happening.


17 December – Sister of slain youth, Asif Iqbal wails during his funeral. Asif, a cab driver was killed by Indian forces when they fired on him outside his home in Kupwara as he was leaving home to ferry a patient. Army blames cross firing for the killing while Police blames mistaken identity.


2017 – Insha Mushtaq, blinded by pellets in 2016, appeared in her 10th class examinations with a helper.


26 December – People join the funeral of Jaish commander, Noor Mohammad in Tral.
