Mohammad Rafiq Bangroo, a 24 years old shawl-weaver, was beaten to pulp by armed forces outside his home at Dana Mazar, Safa Kadal on 12th June. The whole valley was witnessing huge protests against Tufail Matoo killing at the time. He was rushed to SMHS where he succumbed to his injuries on 20th June.

According to eyewitnesses, Rafiq Ahmad Bangroo, who was just outside his house, was caught hold by CRPF troopers and beaten ruthlessly. “Blood was profusely coming out from his head, but that didn’t stop the troopers from beating him, Rafiq was crying and pleading for help but in vain.” Said an eyewitness, pleading anonymity.

The Bangroo family has sacrificed seven of their members for the ’cause’ till date.

Ghulam Rasool Bangroo was the family’s first brush with tragedy when he was subjected to enforced disappearance by the Border Security Force in 1990. And other Bangroos, Javaid Ahmad, Rauf Ahmad, Abdul Hamid, Muhammad Rafiq— all died in indiscriminate firing by troopers.

Following the killing of Rafiq, one person Javeed Ahmad Malla, was also killed and six injured in Srinagar city on 20th of June 2010 as police fired bullets to disperse people in funeral procession of Rafiq.

The State government had ordered a inquiry into the killing of Mohammad Rafiq and few others under the supervision of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Naseema Lanker but justice is yet to be delivered.
